Skin-Stress and Functional Cosmetics

The relationship between psychological stress and skin health represents one of the most fascinating intersections in dermatology, psychology and aesthetics. As estheticians, understanding this bidirectional connection is crucial for providing comprehensive care that addresses not only surface-level concerns but also the underlying factors that perpetuate skin dysfunction. Chronic stress triggers a cascade of physiological responses that directly compromise skin barrier function, accelerate aging processes and exacerbate inflammatory conditions.

The hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis activation during stress leads to elevated cortisol levels, which impair collagen synthesis, disrupt the skin’s natural repair mechanisms and compromise the microbiome balance¹. This understanding has revolutionized how we approach skin care, moving beyond traditional topical treatments to embrace functional cosmetics that address the root causes of skin stress while supporting the body’s natural resilience mechanisms.

Examples of holistic skin care currently available (many of these functional cosmeceuticals overlap):

  • Adaptogenic: Mystro Active Balancing Serum, Stamina Intention Moisturizer, Topical Skin Radiance Renewal Eye Cream
  • Psychocosmetics: XOMD Arouse Moodceutical Moisturizer, Stamina Mist, Selfmade Sad Ritual
  • Neurocosmetics: Avene Tolerance Control Cream, Skinceuticals PTIOX, Revision Skincare CMT Cream
  • Somatic skin care: Kate McLeod Daily Stone, Osmosis Purify, Stamina Mask
  • Antioxidant barrier repair: Topical Skin Phyto AOX Facial Oil, Epicutis Hyvia Cream, Neova Power Defense

Topical Adaptogens: A novel cosmeceutical category in dermatologic skincare

The cosmeceutical sector continues to evolve in response to increasing consumer demand for high-performance skincare that bridges the gap between aesthetic enhancement and therapeutic benefit. Cosmeceuticals are defined as topical formulations containing bioactive substances that exert pharmaceutical-like effects while enhancing cosmetic appearance.

A promising and emerging category within this space is that of topical adaptogens—bioactive agents originally defined for their equilibrating, nonspecific, stress-resilience effects and now being explored for their cutaneous, restorative, and regenerative properties.

The term “adaptogen” was first introduced by Russian toxicologist Nikolai Lazarev in 1958 to describe substances—either natural or synthetic—that increase the body’s resistance to physical, chemical, and biological stressors while promoting homeostasis. Over time, this concept has evolved.

With a growing body of scientific support and strong consumer appeal, topical adaptogens represent a rapidly expanding category in dermatologic cosmeceuticals. Their ability to support skin stamina, reduce inflammation, and optimize skin equilibrium via skin barrier protection and repair makes them a valuable addition to the skincare armamentarium for aesthetic providers. Their optimal potential can be realized in reactive and aging skin as well as peri-procedure.5,8

As research continues to evolve and mechanisms of action are further elucidated, adaptogens are positioned not just as a cosmetic trend but as evidence-informed bioactive agents for comprehensive skin resilience and rejuvenation.

Here are a few skin care lines demonstrating their adaptogenic cosmeceutical potential:

  • SkinBetter Science Mystro Active Balance Serum
  • Pavise Bioadaptive Stress Repair
  • Stamina Intention Moisturize
  • Bioelements Beyond Hydration

FAQs

How and where do I use the Phyto AOX Face Oil in my routine?

You can use the Phyto AOX Face Oil as the last step in your skincare routine, either on its own as a moisturizer or layered on top of your usual cream, such as the Rejuvenating Moisturizer, to help seal in moisture. For added hydration, especially if your skin is very dry, you can blend a few drops of the oil with your cream before applying. If you use treatment products like retinols, acids, or serums, wait until they have fully absorbed, then finish with the Phyto AOX Face Oil to create a nourishing final layer.
Facial oil is the luxurious last step in your routine. Think: serums first, then moisturizer, then lock it all in with a nourishing facial oil

Is facial oil better than moisturizer?

Facial oil is not inherently better than moisturizer; rather, they serve complementary but distinct roles in skincare.

Differences in Composition and Function:

  • Moisturizers typically contain a mix of water-based humectants and emollients that hydrate the skin's surface, keeping it soft, plump, and supple. They deliver immediate moisture and help strengthen the skin barrier.
  • Facial oils are oil-based, made from plant oils rich in essential fatty acids, vitamins, and antioxidants. They do not add water but help seal in moisture, nourish deeply, protect the skin barrier, and provide regenerative benefits.

When to Use Each:

  • Moisturizers are ideal for all skin types to provide surface hydration and prevent dryness, especially during the day. They absorb quickly and can contain ingredients targeting other concerns like fine lines.
  • Facial oils are especially beneficial for dry, aging, or sensitive skin that needs long-lasting moisture and nourishment. They help prevent moisture loss and can balance oily or acne-prone skin due to their similarity to natural skin oils

Can I use the Phyto AOX Face Oil around my eyes?

Phyto AOX Face Oil's nourishing formula helps promote skin that appears firmer and smoother and can soften the look of fine lines and wrinkles; however, it is not recommended to apply it too close to the eyes. Generally, cosmetic face oils can be used around the eye area if applied carefully to avoid getting into the eyes, but because the skin around the eyes is very delicate and sensitive, it’s best to be cautious and consider using products specifically formulated for the eye area, such as TOPICAL SKIN Radiance Renewal Eye Cream.

Is the Phyto AOX Face Oil suitable for all skin types?

Yes, the Phyto AOX Face Oil was designed and developed with all skin types in mind, including sensitive skin, and is suitable for use by both men and women. It features a deeply nourishing blend of hydrating and soothing ingredients. However, if you have very sensitive skin, we recommend reviewing the ingredient list carefully and consulting your doctor if you have any concerns. You can also patch-test the product on your wrist.

Is the Phyto AOX Face Oil fragrance-free?

The Phyto AOX Face Oil is unscented, with no fragrance added. However, the formula has a light, natural scent - a hint of the essential oils that contribute to the efficacy of the product.

Ideal Makeup Companion

To use face oil with makeup, start by applying a few drops to your palms and smoothing it over your face and neck—this works especially well for dry or mature skin, as it helps boost hydration and leaves skin looking plump and smooth. Allow the oil to absorb for at least a few minutes before applying foundation, so it can properly hydrate the skin without making your makeup slide.

If your skin is oily, consider reserving face oil for days when you aren't wearing makeup, since extra oil can cause foundation to break down more quickly. Alternatively, you can apply the oil only to dry areas or high points of the face, avoiding the T-zone to prevent excess shine.

For extra hydration, you can mix a few drops of oil with your primer before applying it to your face. If you want a luminous, dewy finish, blend a drop of face oil with your foundation on the back of your hand before applying—it will give your base a natural glow and make it easier to blend.

PRO TIP: Dab the Phyto AOX Face Oil over your makeup - on the high points of the face - for a natural, subtle highlight.

  • Color Consistency

Because our products include natural ingredients (sustainably-sourced, high potency), they may vary in scent, color, and consistency from batch to batch; however, should you ever have a question or concern on any product, we encourage you to contact us at info@topicalskin.com.

  • Sensitive Skin

If you have sensitive or easily irritated skin, it’s best to test any new product before full use. Apply a dime-sized amount to the inside of your wrist or elbow and leave it on for several hours or overnight. If you notice any irritation in the test area, rinse thoroughly with cool water and discontinue use.

  • Product Storage

In general, to help protect the integrity of skincare products, it is not advisable to expose them to extremes of hot or cold temperatures and better to store them in a dry place at a controlled room temperature (20–25° C/ 68–77° F) and away from areas of humidity and direct sunlight.
